It was just as good the fourth time...
It finally happened. I was finally able to convince the Heterolife mate to go see one if my all time favorite bands ,The Tragically Hip. An event 10 years in the making, and in my eyes the Band didn't disappoint. Gord and the boys were in fine form once again and on tour to promote the new(and very good album)World Container with a 27 city Canadian tour with The Sadies, a band out of Toronto(think Blue Rodeo with more fiddle and mandolin and cow bell). The concert was good, they played stuff I still hadn't heard live, even with this being the 4th time I have seen them. The Save-on-Foods memorial center is a nice place to see a show, intimate, just you and 4 thousand of your closest friends. This is the set list for the show:
1: The Lonely End Of The Rink
2: Courage
3: Twist My Arm
4: Gus: The Polar Bear From Central Park
5: Luv (Sic)
6: It's A Good Life If You Don't Weaken
7: In View
8: Nautical Disaster
9: Long Time Running
10: Pretend
11: Fireworks
12: At The Hundredth Meridian
13: 38 Years Old
14: The Kids Don't Get It
15: Gift Shop
16: Scared
17: Yer Not The Ocean
18: Three Pistols
19: New Orleans Is Sinking
encore
20: C'mon Everybody
21: Family Band
22: Locked In The Trunk Of A Car
But sometimes the real interesting thing about going to a concert, or anywhere really, is the people watching that can occur, and this was no exception. There was the usual drunk girls dancing and the guys who just stand with there ,arms crossed bobbing there heads. But this night we also had DNG2RIF.
It all started when they announced some contest for Canuck fans that they could win a weekend package of some sorts to see the Vancouver canucks take on the Detroit Redwings. whooppee doo. But then "Fred" as I shall call him, upon hearing the words "RedWings" proceeds to stand up and flash his Detroit colors and like he was AT the hockey game right then. Dude took of the Jersey he was wearing and started waving it around, getting told to sit down and prompting a chorus of "Detroit Sucks" and "Vancouver Rules!" chants. It was actually kinda priceless at the time, but it then got better.
He then proceeds to go over to the boards, as we were on the floor, and tried to start the wave. I must say I had never seen the wave at a concert before, still haven't but it was fun to watch him try. Security then came over and tried to reason with "Fred" to get him to sit down and stop jumping around everywhere. This eventually worked, and the Hip came on stage. But then I noticed something, this show was sold out but he amazingly had like 2 seats on each side that were empty, a ton of extra room, that didn't go to waste. I remember commenting to Dlae that it was planned segregation, like shows in Georgia in the 60's. But "Fred" was an animal, he was like in his own little mosh pit, slam dancing (with him self mind you) and jumping off chairs and stuff. Priceless and funny but at least he was having fun.
After the concert the beer was flowing quite freely, as we drank in some place called Sporano's with people we knew at the concert. Over all the trip was very successful, I had dinner at my favorite restaurant with good company, saw The Hip, got drunk. The only downside is i didn't get to go to my favorite Breakfast place as it was closed for Staff Holidays...fuckers I wanted my Classic Benny....
P.S.- I didn't get to post in time about the end of the year and stuff and won't now as it feels like the time has passed but I did want to share my list of the best cd's last year(in no particular order)in my opinion anyway..
