"Yeah I know...but it's my Sabrina...."

This has nothing to do with today's post, but this is video from the Last song of the last show by The Rheostatics, I cool canadian band..

I have long accepted the fact that I can be a bit of a snob when it comes to music and movies. It is a fact that I will not deny and a truth that has been long on display in this little corner of cyber space, however even us movie and music snobs have our little guilty pleasures in the collections. Albums we secretly enjoy on our ipods and movies we would scoff at others for watching but we have in the dvd collection. Yes the Guilty pleasure is a staple in everyones collections, or lists of favorites T.V. shows and movies.

We can't help it really. A guilty pleasure is usually something aimed at the mass market so it has a hook, or a gag that acts like a gravitational pull, pulling you in till you can't help but accept the fact that you can see the qualities that make "Varsity Blues" a good movie in your eyes. A guilty pleasure isn't likely a very well made movie but there is a performance or something about the movie you can't place, something you just enjoy about it. So today I shall bare my soul..ok maybe not my soul but I will let you in on a few of the hidden favorites in the DVD collection..

Top Gulity Pleasure Movies:
(in no particular order)
Movies
1. Varsity Blues
2. Pushing Tin..I am a sucker for Cusack...
3. Desperado4. 80's John Hughes Movies.(Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller's Day Off...etc)
5. Fifth element
6. The Commitments.
7. Not Another Teen Movie...good lord...
8. Billy Madison/Happy Gilmore...it's a tie..
9. A Few Good Men
10.Mean Girls..can't help it I just think this movie is funny thanks to Tina Fey...

Everyone likes new cd"s...

There are those who I talk music with that give me a hard time about listening to new bands. That I don't give new bands a chance....and they for the most part are right. I have a hard time finding something new and interesting in today's music world. Why listen to all the wanna Pearl Jam's(Yes Chad Kroger, Scott Stapp and Chris Doughtry that does in fact mean your dumb asses) when I can listen to the greatness that is Eddie Vedder and Pearl Jam. And please the next person that tries to sell me on the "greatness" of My Chemical Romance will be shot. People love them the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, sure they're good but they haven't really changed over the last 3 albums or so(as I have mentioned before "Stadium Arcadium" did NOT need to be a double album) There have been a few bands that have struck a cord with me over the last few years however.

In my humble opinion I personally think The White Stripes are the best band going in terms of "Rock", I have constantly said they do more with two people than some bands do with 5, but Wolfmother, Sam Roberts and even The Arcade Fire are doing things a little different, making interesting music. Which brings me the the mighty KINGS OF LEON.

The Kings of Leon are an odd mix of southern rock sensibilities, The Power of The White Stripes and a drunk Bob Dylan singing...that's really the only way to describe them, and their new album keeps with that formula. "Because of the Times", the third album form the Kings is a mish mash of their first two albums(Youth and Young Manhood, Ahah Shake Heartbreak) but in a good way. They sing of life on the road and the bad girls that young rock starts always seem to find themselves with. There is a slight undertow of anguish, for lack of a better word to this album. I really can't get enough of this band. There are those out there that will disagree with me(Yeah "Emokid" in the north I am talking to you)when I say these guys are the best band that nobody has latched on to yet. They almost seem to be slightly under the radar. Hopefully their (great)album will get them the attention they deserve.. Days are good when you have a new Kings record to listen too.

Been awhile since I have seen a double feature...

So last night was "Grindhouse Night", I figure since my beloved Habs weren't in the Playoffs it was time to go to a movie and drown my hockey related sorrows in some Tarantino\Rodriguez goodness. And besides when was the last time you got to see a 2 movies for the price of one that didn't involve hiding in the bathroom after the movie you paid for was over so you could sneak into the late show...not that I have done that of course, but I digress...

Any time a new offering from Tarantino comes out it's a time to rejoice I say, unless your talking about the one blight in his catalogue, Jackie Brown, and the whole premise behind this flick was a homage to the B- movies of yester year(Can't believe I just typed yester-year..) The movie as a whole is an experience form the opening credits and fake trailers to the end. I think the only thing missing was people smoking in the theater, to make it feel even cheaper and dirtier. The movie starts of with a fake trailer for "Machete" (this was the best of the fake trailers...fucking with the wrong Mexican..hahahaha)and goes right into the Rodriguez directed "Planet Terror". This is the most fun Zombie movie I have ever seen, next to Shaun Of The Dead, it doesn't take it's self to seriously. It's your typical Zombies created by a military accident take over a town and a small group of stranger led by the mysterious outcast try to stop them. I actually thought that Rose McGowan was good in the role of Cherry Darling. That being said this movie won't win any Oscars, but that's not what they are going for. Remember it's supposed to be a b-movie.

The second half of the movie is the Tranatino directed "Death Proof", and this was the part I was really looking forward to. Ever since I saw Pulp Fiction then immediately went out and saw Reservoir Dogs I have been a fan. The guy is crazy, but he has this was with dialogue, that seems so effortless and real. I like the directors and writers that tend to lean towards the well written dialogue this would of course explain my love of the Kevin Smith, and as with the other movies in Taratino's career this is no exception. He even writes for women well, as Death Proof centers around women. with the only guy really in the cast being Kurt Russell playing Stuntman Mike. This movie was again ,fun. And Tarantino has proven he can shoot an action scene with this movie. Lots of car action in this. It's funny as i sit here and type this somewhat of "my review" I have been tiring to not spoil any plot points but damn it, it's a couple of b-movies really no real plot twists, just some schlock and gory b-movie goodness. But see this movie, it's long (3.5 hours)but it's fun and besides any movie with Rosario Dawson should be worth the viewing...

Playlist of the day:

Neil Young Live At Massy Hall: 1971

This is a great live album,. Even for fans of Neil and have heard the songs before. But the time frame that this album came out in. Just after "After The Gold Rush" and "Harvest", so alot of the songs that he does form Harvest haven't been heard yet by the fans...just a cool album to listen too...
